The Effect of Surface Treatment on Corrosion behavior of Surgical 316L Stainless Steel Implant
Authors
Abstract:
The AISI 316 L Stainless Steel (SS) specimens were exposed to passivation surface through two different processes including; holding in 40-vol% HNO3 at temperature of 60 ºC for 30 min and 15-vol%H2SO4 at ambient temperature for 1 hour. The corrosion behavior of specimens was evaluated in physiological solutions by electrochemical in vitro tests through linear and Tafel polarization tests. Cyclic polarization tests were performed for investigating of the specimen’s resistance against pitting. Finally, the corrosion resistance of untreated and modified specimens was compared. The results show that the corrosion resistance of 316L SS metallic implant is increased due to passivation surface treatment.

full textThe Effect of Surface Roughness on the Fretting Corrosion of 316l Stainless Steel Biomaterial Surfaces
The medical device industry is still seeking answers to the mechanically-assisted corrosion (MAC) problem, which becomes increasingly important due to modularity in design. MAC manifests in various forms, some of which are fretting corrosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion. Several studies have been conducted to understand the causes and the factors that affect fretting corrosion. Some ...
full textEffects of Surface Treatment on Corrosion Resistance of 304L and 316L Stainless Steel Implants in Hank’s Solution
The enormous demands for metal implant have given rise to a search for cheap material with good bio-tolerability and resistance to corrosion. Although stainless steel has these properties and is widely used for this purpose, its long term application is still a concern. The corrosion resistance of stainless steel depends on the passive layer. Herein, chemical surface treatment, including passiv...
full textMicro abrasion-corrosion of AISI 316L stainless steel
In this study, the synergistic effects of abrasion and corrosion on AISI 316L stainless steel have been investigated using a micro-abrasion test rig. A series of results from abrasioncorrosion tests conducted using the micro-abrasion rig are presented. AISI 316L stainless steel has been studied under both pure abrasion and abrasion-corrosion conditions simulated by either distilled water or 3.5...
full textPassivation and corrosion behaviours of AISI 316L stainless steel as implant materials in simulated blood environment
The purpose of the study was evaluation of corrosion resistance of steel 316L used in cardiologic treatment mainly for vascular stents. The study analysed influence of electrochemical and chemical treatment of the steel surface, including sterilisation with pressurised water steam, on its corrosion characteristics. The tests were performed in artificial blood plasma simulating human blood envir...
full textCorrosion Behavior of Stainless Steel Clad Rebar
Stainless steel clad rebar (SCR) was investigated because it may become a cost-effective means of controlling corrosion in concrete under very aggressive environments. Sound SCR (316L cladding) resisted corrosion in saturated Ca(OH)2 solution (SCS) with up to 5 wt% chloride. Cladding breaks on SCR induced significant corrosion of exposed underlying CS in SCS with only 1 wt% chloride. A computer...
